Safe Childcare Transport: Protecting the Kids and Yourself

By Nationally-recognized expert, Joseph M. Colella, Traffic Safety Projects, Maryland
Sponsored by Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies (HMHB)-MT Coalition

2008 training opportunity is for staff members of Head Start Programs, Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies, Child Care Providers, Child and Family Services and any other groups who transport children.

By: National expert speaker/trainer Joseph M. Colella of Traffic Safety Projects, Maryland, and Patricia Carrell, State Coordinator for Safe Kids Montana at Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies (HMHB).

History:  Over the past two years, Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies has been delivering their very successful, statewide occupant protection education program, to empower various professional groups to partner more effectively with child passenger safety technicians and advocates, to get the proper safety messaging to parents and caregivers.  Groups already receiving these trainings, including healthcare professionals, law enforcement officers and first responders, have praised the program and its importance.

Year 3 of this project will bring an exciting, new training to Early Childcare Professionals.  A standardized, statewide curriculum that delivers practical transportation information specific to childcare needs and best practices, as well as state childcare requirements and resources.  The training will include the latest crash test videos, demonstrations and a “hands-on” component.   Local agency staff and providers will receive a certificate of completion and 2 ECP training credits. Certified CPS Technicians will earn 2 CPS Re-certification CEUs.

A 1-hour, community presentation for the general public is also available if requested, and if scheduling allows, and will provide basic child passenger safety guidelines, as well as, a heightened awareness of the importance of proper restraint practices by every person in the vehicle, not just children.

Patricia Carrell, State Coordinator for Safe Kids Montana at HMHB, coordinates the travel/training schedule that will include 12 weeks in 2008.
Please contact her with any specific requests for training dates.
