Safe Sleep for Babies

The safest place for babies to sleep is on their backs, in a crib in your room. This makes night-time breastfeeding easier, and may help protect against SIDS.

The "Safe Sleep for Baby" program provides safe sleep environments (cribs) to high risk babies and their families and educates these families on SIDS prevention and safe sleep practices.  Montana’s Fetal, Infant, and Child Mortality Review Program identified 12 babies who died between 1997—2002 due to being placed in unsafe sleep environments

Since 2002, the Safe Sleep for Baby Project has provided 156 babies and families with safe cribs and education.  Public health nurses deliver the cribs and provide education to the families.  The demand for safe sleep cribs continues to exceed the supply.

Each "Safe Sleep" crib package contains

  • Pack ‘n Play Playard
  • Two fitted playard sheets
  • Baby safe sleep sack (sleeper)
